I would like to share with you my opinion on judging of welsh ponies and cobs. I have shown my welsh section D with all welsh societies and I have come to the opinion that I will never be placed higher up the line simply because my horse isn’t overweight. When the judges of are welsh ponies and cobs going to realise that it is not healthy or fair on the horse to have it so overweight that they are huffing and puffing round the ring. I was at a show recently and the horses were sweating in walk. I will no longer be taking my horse to any of the welsh shows again until the judges start too see sense and put the horses welfare first. Also my vet and farrier agree with me that these horses will be better off fitter than fatter!

i understand what you mean there are a few show horses, no breed in particular, are slightly overweight and some judges like them to carry a bit of weight. in my opinion though, most of the judges out there have the sense to see past weight and place on manners and conformation etc.

Its true that many sec C's and D's are carrying a few exta pounds. I beilieve its done to compensate for the lack of size in the 'modern cob'. Todays cob's ancestors had a lot heavier bone and were generally bigger animals alltogether. In Britain over the last couple of decades there has been a move to breed finer animals, although the judges are obviously still looking for a bit of chunkyness!!
