I have done a few local shows this season and been placed every time ;D but there is always room for improvement !
Anyway my question is this, how should i stand my 2yr old sec D gelding for the judge? i have been given a few opinions but i don't know who is right, these are back legs slightly camped out behind, the other it one back leg stretched out, so which is right, and if they both are which looks best?
the other thing is anyone have any tips for keeping him looking interested in what he is doing and not half asleep lol.
Thanks Sarah

Hello,I'm a beginner at inhand showing, I was told by two very experience inhand showers to stand them up square and have a couple of hands full of grass in your pocket to keep them looking lively(i didn't try the latter though)

I think it all depends on the horse/pony itself. Personaly I like the pose where the back legs are slightly camped out behind (especialy for stallions), but some horses simply look better when you don't do this. Maybe you could make some pictures in the possible different poses and let the people on this forum tell you what pose suits your gelding best and - of course - you will be able as well to judge in which pose your gelding looks at his best. 'Food' is always something that keeps them looking interested, but sometimes they will not stand still and try to get hold of it. A toy, that makes noice when you squeeze is (the kind of thing very little children have or that's used for dogs), might help him to keep him attentive. That is - of course - if he's not afraid of it.

hi ive been showing for about 2yrs now, my section d gets very bored inhand and he does fall asleep so i do more ridden than inhand, but inhand i get him to stand as if hes having a wee (back legs out at the back) and in some like m+m large i get him to stand square so he looks bigger which he is big any way (15.3-16hh) and he gets quite good placed, see how long it takes you to stand your horse in the positions and which one he looks best in (the quickest and the nice looking one), and than run him as fast as you can but keep him in trot dont let him canter or youll get nocked down, they show there paces more in faster trot. hope it all helps see ya soon dawny
p.s keep a crisp rapper in your pocket and play with it when hes stood still and just have fun the best thing to do is to ask the jugde, just say youve been told diff things and dont no which to follow, they are really good apart from the big snoby ones see ya

ok so now i need to train him to stand with his legs camped out behind, any tips on how to do this? I think he will look better like this that square but the only way to know for sure is to look.
thanks Sarah

with my mums shire X i make him stand square very quickly than when the jugde makes his way over to look at him i get a big hand full of fresh looking grass and hold it far from him but above his head i pock the show cane in his chest (it doesnt hurt) so he want move any further forward and than he nows hes got to reach out for it, he puts his front legs out a bit more and than leans forward and his back legs are out and looks very nice than i get more grass and than do it so he brings his head in, sorry its a lot of righting
an easy way, get your horse up on a hill and act as if you were showing on the flat and ask your horse the way you would ask him normal to stand square and he will than stand better as it is up hill, you will see he will have his back legs out to help him stand better.
hope it helps dawny
