Hey from New Zealand

Just thought Id pop in and say hello from New Zealand. Im new to the purebred welsh showing world and loving every moment of it. I found this site surfing the net and love it so decided to join the discussion board to get some hints from you guys.

I own a slightly vertically challenged (141.5cm) Section D stallion called Lorien Elrond whos pedigree has Hewid Dafydd on both sides. I show him in hand in the welsh sections and inhand led pony sections at our shows over here and he is working towards a ridden career as well.

Anyway I will be picking your brains for anything and everything no doubt as always keen to learn some new tricks.

My boy is competing in one of our countries Welsh Nationals this coming weekend and we have Mr John Russell from the UK as our judge so very much looking forward to it.

I own a 7 yr old Section D stallion, section C 2 yr old palamino Filly, 1 liver chestnut 2 yr old partbred colt, I lease 3 section A geldings, grey, perlino and palamino, plus I have about 25 other horses mainly cross breds including a clyde welsh TB cross stallion and crossbred native bred pinto stallion. I breed good reliable easy to deal with hassle free horses and ponies that anyone can enjoy.

Im so hooked on welshies now it isnt funny and Ive been showing them for a year now. 3 of my kids drive the partbred, sec C filly and the section A geldings as well as two miniatures in a thing we call kids karts over here which is harness racing miniaturised. loads of fun for kids and ponies anyway and an easy way to keep the show team toned up.

Well thats all about me, any hints on what I might need to know to do for this judge Im meeting in the weekend will be much appreciated, we need it as my boy seems to be a slight bit too laid back and more like a gelding which makes it abit hard in the stallion classes over here.

Everyone wants my boys tail. Ive just been told I should pull the top of it and thin the bottom for showing him and I just about died He is like a cameleon as well coat wise changes from a dark chocolate colour to alight red depending on the weather basically.

Are cobs tails done like that over there? Ive only seen the imports here like that is all. We dont have alot of cobs here but it is my boys old owner who told me to do it to help show him off better. Cobs are slowly getting more popular here but more the Cs than the Ds.

It would honestly take all day to show you all my horses on here and Im sure they wouldnt appreciate me doing it either. My horses heights start at 83cm through to 178cm. I think it might be easier to check out my website for that one, but I havent updated it for awhile.

Here is my clyde TB welsh Cross lad Awatea Benjamin Brown who I bred myself and I own his full sister who has a blaze and 4 stckings to her knees or hocks. And the other one is my Pinto Crossbred stallion BS Kahurangi. Those are my 3 resident stallions at present.

your boy is lovely his colouring is really nice.

i have a welsh d gelding he is rather laidback in hand dont know much about in hand showing so cant give you any advice there. working towards getting my boy out doing ridden classes again this summer. you said he was laidback in hand, perhaps he will really come into his own undersaddle ;D

Welcome on the forum.
A few tricks to make your stallion a bit more fierce are giving him black oats and locking him up in a dark stable a week before the show. Only let him out the day of the show. I know that sounds cruel and I would never do this to my cob, but it seems to work.
Normaly, cobs are showed as natural looking as possible. A small plait just behind the ears to accentuate the neckline is allowed.
I love the tail of your horse, but for a show I would make it a bit thinner and shorter (with a kind of slicer). That way his tail is not that heavy and he will carry it higher.
My mare had a tail nearly to the ground and I shorted it about 20/25 cm last week and made in a lot thinner too. She looks really happy with it. She even walks different, 'cause she's no longer afraid to tread on it.
Cobs also trot more impressive when they are shoed, but you most likely knew this already.
Your stallion would probably bend his neck more impressive, if he was wearing 'stallion tack' (I don't know exactly how you name it... a roller and/or something ?). Sorry my native language is not English.

hi, welcome too. where in new zealand ar you?my bro lives in new zealand, i have a beauty of a section d, (but can't figure out how to put a photo up for you guys-any help people??-tchnically challenged me) anyways back to the gee gees, i am gonna show her in hand this year and see what we can get up to, got to get her looking au naturel though, as gypsys right-natural is for sec d's. i love their manes!!!
