Hi, i'm new here so hope everything works. This is my welsh cob Coathamdene Solomon, he's by Tynybryn Whats Wanted and out of Keiman Sabrina (by K Survivor). He's only eight, but he's had to be prematurely retired due to ringbone. he's been lame for about 9 months now and is presently turned away. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on keeping him comfortable, even if he can't be ridden again. I'vr tried cortaflex HA, cod liver oil, cider vinegar (all together) and magnetic band which he kept for 2 months before killing! thanks

Hello and welcome :)your boy is lovely.Sorry to hear about his ringbone. Just a suggestion, don't know if it will help or not but have you tried devils claw, you can get it in gel form so it can go straight on the ringbone.A friend of mine used it on her old dog(i know not quite the same as a horse) and it did him some good for his joints etc.If you read up about it, it's used for osteoarthritis. It might be worth a try.Hope this helps.

hi, welcome. your boy is gorgeous ;D, sorry to hear about the ringbone. my mum's old welsh d had ringbone (i think, too young to remember!) and i thing she had special shoes to help with it. just looking on the internet, it says... Shoeing For RingboneOne of the methods of dealing with ringbone involves corrective shoeing. The corrective shoeing, consists of shortening the toe and applying a full roller motion shoe to transfer the action from the pastern and coffin joints to the shoe area. If the horse has good conformation, he said, the toe alone can be rolled; if not, a full roller motion shoe should be applied. not sure if this helps at all though... also another horse who used to be at my yard had a sachet of bute every day/every other day and this kept him comfortable and he could be ridden lightly. Also at one point he was given supplements based on devils claw as september suggests and they helped also, as well as being cheaper than bute. hope this helps... hannah xxx

thank you so much for all your ideas, I'm a bit unsure about the bute as he's only 8 and long term use can lead to digestive problems and liver failure (I heard). Thought about the devils claw and i've even got a tub of comfrey ointment at home, i'll keep you posted!

My mum's made comfrey oilment,it's good stuff ,especially for mudfever too.I read that in France horse owners used to dig up comfrey roots and give it to their horses to insure a years good health
