I've just had the vet out for what I thought was onset of conjunctivitis, turns out my beautiful boy has a corneal ulcer (developed overnight) as a secondary complication of Equine Recurrent Uveitis. Has anyone else experienced this condition and how do you manage it? Long term prognosis is blindness in one or both eyes, I am so gutted , he's only 5!

Thankfully it wasn't as bad as the vet initially thought. After two weeks of hospitalisation and round the clock antibiotics to treat the corneal ulcer he was able to come home. Eye specialist decided everything was caused by an allergic reaction, and after moving fields all signs of allergy were gone within a week. All he has now is a small scar from the ulcer. I have learnt not to take risks with horse's eyes as things can escalate into something quite serious very rapidly. Do not just assume weepy swollen eyes are conjunctivitis, get an expert opinion. I have been really lucky, and thank goodness for insurance because this whole thing has ended up costing nearly £2,500!
