Does anyone agree that show horses are too fat?
I think there should be more muscle as many horses are prone to Lammi when people are stuffing them with high protein foods etc.
Post your opinions.

I haven't seen many show horses as that worlds far beyond me,but if I was in the showing world I wouldn't want to show a fat animal.I didn't like showing lady locally as she has a grass belly. Also I think you have to be careful not to get to obsessed about weight as there are some strange ideas going about on how to keep them slim ,I have seen alot of very lean thin ponies about this year .There was a very beautiful colt at my local show not an inch of fat on him but not skin and bone, she came 2nd, as I earwigged her conversation on the way out the ring, the judge had said he was too fat!,yet the 1 that won was fat.

That seems a bit ironic, I do like my ponies to look well but I think some of these show horses are stuffed up to much and it's no good for them, they should be judged on their overall conformation in their natural state.
If it was a human that fat, the doctor would tell us we are a walking heart attack, and when you think of the size of a horses legs and feet to their body comparison they have a lot of weight to carry.

I do agree with you I don't get the whole 'feeding up' for the show ring and also the other cruel methods to fire then up in the show ring for the sake of a coloured ribbon and abit of tin

Was the judge right? While your there have a look at the grey at the bottom of the same page ,thats me and my boy senny,we're useless but have fun being so ;D

i dont really know much so couldnt say either way really but would say that i dont think it looks fat and it is gorgeous. your boy is gorgeous too! lovely trot stride on him, wish my boy would trot out like that in hand! back to fat show horses, suppose you get the fat ones, but you also get the really skinny ones. Laminitis is a horrible condition though, so they really shouldnt let horses get too fat and put them at risk. May/June time people probably thought my boy was overweight but by mid-august we were having to feed him more to keep him at a decent weight as it was just grass fat that dropped off quickly once he was in full time work again. So i suppose it is just personal opinion on whether a horse is too fat or too thin, someone might think a horse is too fat but someone else might think it is just right. Sorry, seems this has turned into a bit of an essay hannah xxxxx

I cannot understand either, why they feed showponies so fat. A muscular horse/pony is of course very beautifull, but not fat. It should all be about lean muscle, not just volume. I am very cautious about my mare not getting too fat. Maybe a bit over-cautious, because I had to put down my first pony because she got laminated (and some complications). Also Daisy's grandfather : Geler Ifan Ho died at a very young age, because he got laminated (at least that's what I have been told). So, I am always worried that Daisy might become too fat (although she's 4 months pregnant now). There are some recent pics of her in a seperate thread. If you think, she's becoming too fat, please tell me.
