Most breeders start breeding when the mare is 3 years old, so she'll have her 1st foal when she is about 4 years old. My mare (Rhanwid Daisy) is now 6 and has had her 3 foal this year... and is back into foal to Geler Ryan. Some people start already when the mare is only 2, but - from what I've seen around me - it then often happens that mares do not get "full" (don't know if this is the correct word, English is not my native language, sorry) the year after.

My mare has had her 1st foal when she was 4 (covered at the age of 3). She's a very good and protective mother (I still have the 'bite-scar' from this year ::) ) First time she foaled, she did it all on her own withouth anybody being around. Second time, her owners saw it, but didn't do a thing. Third time (this year), she surprised us all with having a foal a month early.

our mares arent covered until they are 6yrs old. This gives them a chance to mature and get themselves well known in the show ring(people tend to want a foal with well known parents). Our 3yr old filly was bred 2 Thorneyside The Boss in 2004, and didnt know what to do with a foal, she wanted to play-she plays by kicking around with the occasional bite, but of course this was injuring the foal. She was 2 immature. She was covered last yr(age 6) by same stallion and has a stunning black colt! Hope this helps.

My mare had her first foal when she was 4 (covered when she was 3), but she wasn't my property at the time yet. To be honest, I was also thinking into that direction with my filly of this year. First showing her a while and only start breeding on a 'later' age.
